let's take a walk, taxi or carriage, and see this ciudad
La Gran Sultana
Granada was founded in 1524 and is “the oldest city in central america established during the Spanish conquest". The city has a fascinating history – during colonial times (16th-18th centuries), Granada was attacked repeatedly by pirates of other foreign powers (French/British) The 19th century saw internal civil conflicts. During the 19th century, the city was also the nation's capital for a while.
In 1861 Managua was finally given this distinction, ending decades of fighting between conservative Granada and liberal León for national dominence. Granada was sought after, captured, and destroyed by north american mercenaries led by William Walker of Tennessee during the civil war of the 1850s.
The Jewel Shines Again
The last decades of the 20th century were another difficult period for Nicaragua. The victorious Sandinista Revolution 1978-1979 and the Contra War 1984-1990 kept Nicaragua on the front pages of international media. The resolution of that conflict in 1990 closed one chapter and began the next. From a trickle of travellers in the 90s to a torrent in the 00s. Granadinos are once again proud to welcome visitors.
